License Your Dirt Bike
From time to time, we see dirt bikes with a MN street license plate and wonder how to do it. I have street licensed a couple of bikes (a DRZ400 and a WR250F) and here's how I did it.
1. You NEED the MSO or Manufactures Statement of Origin. Without the MSO, it is very tough process. 2. Add to your bike- a dual beam headlight, one rear view mirror, horn, and a brake light actuated by at least one wheel. The muffler needs to be reasonably quiet as well. Turn signals and speedo are not required, but are a nice feature to have. You can piece together individual components, or you can buy a kit from various sources. 3. You will want to swap to DOT rated tires. Kenda and Pirelli sell dirt tires which are DOT rated. 4. Get the MN DMV form for construction of a custom motorcycle and fill out part "B". http://www.dps.state.mn.us/dvs/PDFForms/Forms/recon9.pdf 5. Have a police officer, sheriff, or highway patrol officer inspect your motorcycle stating that the equipment is installed. Have him/her sign your completed form. 6. Head to the DMV dept. Bring with your MSO, the reconstruction form, and all the receipts from buying the motorcycle & accessories to complete the street legal process. MN will want to see that MN sales tax has been paid or you will need to be ready to pony up the sales tax. 7. Get the plate, give it a smooch, and mount it on your bike. 8. Be sure your bike is insured before hitting the highway. 9. Have lots of fun with your dual sport bike. Children under the age of 16 must be certified by the Minnesota DNR to be eligible to ride in the Paul Bunyan State Forest and all other state forests. This includes trail riding and AMA sanctioned events.
Certification is easy. It consists of completing a safety oriented workbook and written test. Fee is $5.00 submitted with the written test.
To receive the Off Highway Motorcycle packet from the DNR, call: 1-888-646-6367 or 651-296-6157.
